Mark has coached thousands of clients, including world champions and Commonwealth Games gold medalists, in this video he will show in a live assessment the exact screening systems to help clients achieve a perfect squat.
He demonstrates a bodyweight squat with a client, identifying a “butt wink” (inefficiency or deficiency in utilizing the core). The butt wink is caused by a weak core, which can be improved with exercises that engage the core. We use a kettlebell to help the client engage her core and correct the butt wink.
The clat test, is a modified version of a traditional test used to assess lower body function. The test involves standing on one leg, doing a slight knee bend, and hopping forward. Mark uses the test to assess the client’s feet, knees, and hips
As Mark assesses the client’s lower body function, identifying issues with her left leg, including femur rotation and weakness in the glutes, note that the client is moving towards her quadriceps and away from her glutes, indicating weakness in the glutes.
The range of motion test, where the client reaches down to touch her toes. The test assesses whether the client uses her lower back or hips to move.
Next is the backward flexion test, where the client leans back with her hands on her hips. The test assesses the client’s lower back function, particularly for deadlifting and overhead pressing.
These tests used are challenge tests, which are more relevant to everyday activities than passive tests. It uses a series of five tests to assess the client’s function and identify areas for improvement
Based on the assessment, the trainer would design a program for the client, including unilateral and bilateral work, pauses, and rowing exercises. The program would also focus on core strength, upper back mobility, and glute activation.
Watch and listen in as Mark Ottobre shows a live assessment, discussing tips and the tools in order to assess a squat properly.
