When I first met Jaz, I could tell that I had a good foundation to work with for fitness modelling. However, after discussing her nutrition and taking initial biosig readings it was apparent that despite leading a ‘healthy lifestyle’, Jaz did not know how to get the most out of her body and work towards her specific goals.
As a coach, my goal for Jaz was to reeducate her and not just ‘tell her what to do’ but explain why she needed to do it so that she felt confident in our plan.
Jaz is the first vegan client we have taken all the way to the stage while staying 100% true to a vegan diet. I must admit, it’s certainly not the ideal scenario when working with fitness models and people concerned with body composition. I knew I would need to do some extra research to ensure a safe and effective comp prep.
It should be noted that if you too are a vegan, it’s important to find a trainer who has a solid understanding of nutrition so that they can help you support your body with the right nutrients- some of which will be lacking in a vegan diet. I did this with a very specific supplementation protocol including amino acids and B group vitamins.
To ensure adequate nutrient intake on a vegan diet, I advised Jaz to alternate between having a protein shake with her meal and supplementing with amino acids. This would also up-regulate her bodies’ ability to detoxify, improve recovery from training and maintain lean muscle.
Trusting in me and trusting in the process, Jaz achieved outstanding results following her new protocol. She dropped 3.2% body fat in 10 days (yes, you read that correctly- 10 days). And one week later after increasing her carbohydrate and fat intake she dropped a further 1%. Feeling strong and looking toned and lean, she decided to prep for her first fitness modeling competition.
Jaz competed at the INBA Melbourne Classic as a proud representative of Team Enterprise Fitness. In preparation for her competition, we INCREASED her food intake and taught her how to train effectively. She did not do any cardio and even ate a cheat meal 4 days out from comp day (a gluten-free Nutella topped dessert pizza).
Jaz is an interesting client to work with- always presenting me with new challenges to test my knowledge and overcome. I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to implement, test and measure innovative nutritional and supplementation protocols to help Jaz get the most out of her body, her diet and the time she spends training in the gym.
